REGISTRATION
OF VESSELS FOR BELIZE
A
vessel is first provisionally registered (6 months) during which
time requirements for permanent registration (5 years) must be
fulfilled.
The
requirements for vessel registration are:
- APPLICATION
FORM. The applicant must submit a signed
notarized application form stating all pertinent
particulars of the vessel. A ship
radio station license application form must also
be submitted. To expedite registration, forms are first accepted
by fax or email with hard copies to follow.
- REGISTERED
TITLE or Certificate of Ownership. A Document or Certificate
that will prove ownership of the vessel. In cases where a transfer
of ownership takes place at time of registration, this requirement
takes the form of a notarized Bill
of Sale. In the case of a new vessel, the Builders
Certificate is acceptable. In case of auction sale, the judicial
sale instrument is required. A fax copy is first required followed
by the notarized original within six months of provisional registration.
- TONNAGE
CERTIFICATE of the vessel. Tonnage Certificates issued by the
various technical organizations authorized by the Belize Government
are acceptable and has to be submitted within six months of
provisional registration.
- DELETION
CERTIFICATE. A document attesting to the vessel’s de-registration
from the previous country of registry. The original notarized
Deletion Certificate or a notarized certified true copy is required
within six months of provisional registration in order to process
the permanent registration.
- MINIMUM
SAFE MANNING CERTIFICATE

Belize determines the minimum level of crew to safely operate
each vessel after owner submits an application
form and pays the required fees.
- POWER
OF ATTORNEY.
Notarized
designation as shipowner’s resident shipping agent in Belize.
Power of Attorney Form.
- SPECIAL
REGISTRATIONS.
Vessels
may be registered for a maximum of 3 months for special navigation
purposes such as Delivery voyage, Voyage for Scrapping or Transfer
to Dockyard. The registration automatically expires after 3 months
and no deletion certificate is issued. All Maritime Safety Regulations
must be complied with during the period of special registration.
- FEES.
Belize has a competitive schedule
of fees covering registrations, deletions, mortgage
registrations, transfer, etc.
